Hello 2011

WheelerandCompany should be back with a bang, but are instead are back with a bug!

I refuse to believe, for the sake of my wonderful other home, that this was, in any way, picked up on German soil and rather on the flight home to Dublin in an aeroplane which was previously carrying germs and passengers from Barcelona or Bologna.
My happy memories of our wonderful ten days in Berlin will remain with me for a long time. I was uneasy initially going back again after our three month holiday earlier in the year. I was apprehensive that it would not live up to my expectations and I hoped that the memories were really as good as the real thing.  Berlin did not disappoint, in fact I am back with the impression that no matter how often I go , I will find some new and exciting memory to take back with me.

We left Dublin along with the snow and arrived in a silent black-night blizzard in Berlin to our little home which was warm and welcoming.
Ten fun filled days followed with a special birthday visit to Moorlake on the number 218, an old historical bus and a short sleigh ride through the woods.  The Technical Museum got another visit to keep the trainspotter in the family happy and a visit to Mach Mit Kinder Museum in Prenzlauerberg.  I did get my pizza bianca in Cafe am Neuem See and some spƤtzle in Repke on Bleibtreu Strasse ...  I could go on for an hour in happy memories.

Bug and all, we have not been eating a lot since our return but I have a few great new soup recipes to pass on to you in the next few days and, given that its January and there are resolutions expected in some form or other so I will be adopting a healthy and more frugal approach, for a few weeks anyway.  I have of course ulterior motives here as I must be able to squeeze into my ski suit in about six weeks time and having spent the last three weeks eating wiess wurst, leber wurst, curry wurst, wiener wurstchen, blutwurst and various other wurst varieties washed down with equally large amounts of wine, champagne and beer, a little bit of a healthy recognition should be given to my diet.

I had to buy these zimt mandeln (cinnamon and chocolate covered almonds) from KaDeWe simply to compare them to those from Borough Market.  I am undecided which are best so maybe another trip to Borough Market is required just for confirmation.  The Printen from Aachen (see beautiful box above) lasted maximum two days.  Needless to say, I will have to take strict and immediate action!

Anyway I want to thank you all dear readers for your wonderful emails, inspiration and support since February when I started this blog.  I hope that you have a good year and throughout the difficult times, it's good to sit down to eat dinner together, whether its only a fried egg on toast or a roast chicken with all the trimmings.  Do it, it might not solve all the problems, but if you make it yourself, it will make you feel better.  Thank you and give yourselves a hug for being great!
